To tell you the truth, at that stage, with that chip stack, I would actually give his call a lot more respect (like he wanted someone to raise preflop so he can jam). In other words, JJ at this stage of the tourney with his chip stack is generally where he wants all his money in the middle, even if it's a race. At least, that's the opinion I have of the guy. Plus, personally, I'm not a big fan of pushing all in on a marginal situation like that... I mean even though it's a safe looking board, that also means that it's a safe looking board for the opponent. I think I like that move if you actually had the 7 because I think the guy could be calling with a wide range thinking you're trying to bluff at it.

Hoy had a nice post today about a pseudo similar situation.

And yeah, I'll see you at the mook tonight!Alan aka RecessRampagehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00544791207717813141noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13519202.post-20089769654726531372007-05-09T12:15:00.000-07:002007-05-09T12:15:00.000-07:00#1... The call is fine if you think your opponent will pay you off if you hit your straight. If not, don't call.
#3... I agree with the check. I also think he played it correctly by checking behind you.
#4... I think the push is the right move. You bet enough that he "should" push so why not make him play for it all anyway.TechGuyTomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10749192144062864554noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13519202.post-30555506520262841442007-05-09T10:50:00.000-07:002007-05-09T10:50:00.000-07:00Thanks Alan for the comments. I mentioned stack sizes in the middle of question #4; but that was about it.

It's nice to see what others are thinking on similar hands (i.e. you thought I may have a bigger ace or 2 pair and then I thought you might not have one).. Good stuff.

My stats showed you as a 16/10 guy which to me was fairly tight (but not overly tight). Like you said, won't steal blinds everytime.

See ya at the Mook tonight.WillWonkahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06154883018461460762noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13519202.post-53881721769975126422007-05-09T10:27:00.000-07:002007-05-09T10:27:00.000-07:00I certainly rememember that hand. One key piece of...I certainly rememember that hand. One key piece of information missing here is the stack size. I honestly considered raising all in on the river when you bet. I thought a) you couldn't have had a straight so I thought you might be betting with your missed flush draw. Maybe if you got lucky and caught two pair (like a J-10) on the turn, my 3rd ace on the river would better that. And considering I think it would have been only like 400 more, I felt that pushing here was justified. Fortunately, I also thought that there's no point in putting extra chips in here where I could also realistically be beat by a backdoor flush, some funkey straight and if I think my hand is good enough, it was call worthy but not raise worthy.

Having said that, I will say that I was surprised. I was laying the ground work of building a tight image (which I think worked because you thought I was fairly tight, ie I don't automatically try to steal from the button) so the call from the blinds with KQ is definite but a call on the flop was very surprising. At that point, I thought you had a better ace, maybe a flush draw or a 10. Did not expect KQ. Actually, to tell you the truth, I tossed the possibility of a KQ out the door. So, on the turn when the J came, now, I was certainly worried that you were checking a monster (like AJ, catching two pair) and that if I bet out on the turn again, I'd be raised. True, there was a chance that you were just chasing a flush but I wanted to see another card before I did anything here. The river brought another ace which in my mind made it very unlikely that you had an ace in your hand. So, then I thought is this guy trying to buy this pot now that he missed his flush? And that's why I called. Again, wasn't push worthy for me at that point but if you pushed, I don't know if I would have folded. I may have. I really don't know. You definitely got a lot of chips out of me though so at least that's good. Tough to win a lot of chips with a royal, I think.

Nice hand... unfortunately, my miracle comeback was cut short when I jammed with 88 on a 3-4-4 board, only to be called by Waffles with 33... And yes, I raised preflop from UTG. Dammit, I'm a tight player! :)Alan aka RecessRampagehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00544791207717813141noreply@blogger.com
