Hhahaha! Love the chat.
He's definitely one of the players I'd rather not have at my table.
Did you ever consider folding this hand? I could see folding AQ preflop to an MP raise, or on the river since you have less than even TPTK. Not saying I would have or that you should have, just curious if you ever considered folding it since you played it so passively and yet all you mentioned was possibly raising the river.
Btw the way you played that hand (in particular checking the turn), it's gonna be hard to get anyone at most levels to lay down the AK there.
Doubt anyone is folding river the way that went. Maybe if you had bet turn, but even then... Your range is completely polarized... you would most likely rr AK pf, and try to get more $$ in on the turn with 2pr or trips. That leaves you with AQ or air, making a river shove useless.
As always, I'm probably wrong, but there ya go... :)
I think you played it well. I honestly might have folded the turn once the J hit...what could I really beat there, then, but A-10? But I call the river once he bets it because of that check. You didn't shove when the other A hit the river, which would have been stupid, but you didn't. I think you lost the minimum on the hand. Nice work.
WP I think too! I think the call might be justified after all. Let's say he raise here with KK or QQ. Don't we expect him to C-bet often on this flop then to avoid the risk of being bluffed away from any of the two players behind? So when U call and he checks the turn there is still a chance he is betting the river with a worse hand, trying to get you off an ace-high hand with modest kicker you might have choosen to call with?
On the other hand - if he thinks you're a decent player on the tight side (what are your stats?) I guess he don't expect you to call here normally either with a low pair (representing a set postflop) or AJ. Because AJ isn't a hand that we call a pretty tight, good reg with when he raises from EP or MP.
As for his comments... well, this is poker. He plays to win and although a quite nice guy as it seems he isn't one of your buddies, right? So I don't know if we can be sure that the "would have fold"-comment wasn't a little trappy. Why should he give away information about his style of play that you might be able to exploit?
Hoy.. I definitely thought about folding preflop; especially against this player. I thought raising as well.
With position, I called.
The river bluff, I would only think of with players like him. We have an ongoing chat where I say he never pays me off.
He always says to show him a bluff first or that he has never seen a bluff from me.
Of course I have bluffed; but didn't see showdown.
I really think calling may have been worse play here; but at the end, I thought he could have AQ himself or KK or QQ and called.
Personally, I think this is a cooler. To those that lay down AQo PF, really? From the CO? A 15/12 has a pretty wide range which includes all pairs, AJ(?)+, suited connectors, KQ... from the high jack... and he has a decent steal percentage - so he's a thinking player with a chance to open a pot. If you're going to fold, are you folding because of fear of the player, or are you folding because of a weak hand?
BTW - did you move up in stakes? Are you running better? Congrats, Will! Job well done [I hope].
Did I move up? Nope. Running bad if the truth be known.
Interesting story as for me. I'd like to read more about this topic. Thanx for sharing this data.
