Best Hand in Poker

So what do you know... even a blind donkey can find a winning hand (more on that later)... as usual, I played in the Hoy . It is obviously a great tourney... especially now that it is a deep stacked. I continued to get points in the BBT , but no cashes yet. Last night, I tried something new... I tried getting my chips in with the worst of it... They didn't work for me either.

Somewhat questionable move. I was among the top 10 and then in a couple of hands moved down to last; although, I still enough chips to be in play and not desperate. I actual chipped back up to about average when the following hand.

Nothing to exciting here... Heads up with a middle position limper.

*** FLOP *** [7s 5h 7h]

What do you do... I obviously like this flop as I paired up. My plan was to check with the intention of check raising...

willwonka checks
cemfredmd bets 975

Hmmm big bet... What kind of hands to you put this person on....

My thoughts were 88-99 or 2 broadway cards. It felt like to me that he didn't want a call. What do you do? I thought I may be behind to mid pkts; but I thought I could get him to lay them down. Here is what I did.

willwonka raises to 3,983, and is all in...

Well, I was wrong... he took a little while to think... but called with JJ and IGHN.

The limp threw me off as well as the big bet. Any thoughts?

But the hand of the night for me also received a little discussion... I'm not sure I agree with the majority on this one.. but they are probably right... Here is the hand in it's entirety

Full Tilt Poker
No Limit Holdem Ring game
Blinds: $30/$60
8 players
Converter

Pre-flop: (8 players) Hero is BB with :kc :qc
5 folds, Button raises to $210, SB folds, Hero calls.

Flop: :tc :as :2s ($450, 2 players)
Hero checks, Button bets $300, Hero calls.

Turn: :jc ($1050, 2 players)
Hero checks, Button checks.

River: :ac ($1050, 2 players)
Hero bets $800, Button calls.

Results:
Final pot: $2650

An argument could be made for me playing this badly on all streets... So let's put out a 4 part questionnaire.
#1... Call preflop raise of 210 by the button from the BB (3.5 BB) with KQs out of position? My stats showed raiser to be fairly tight... but could have been just a blind steal. As it was fairly early in tourney, I'm not looking for huge preflop pots so I called. Thoughts?
#2... Flop isn't terrible; but isn't good. I check. Button Continues with a 300 chip bet into a 450 pot. I'm not sure of the right answer here. With plenty of chips and a gut shot straight and back door flush, I'm OK with seeing another card. I call.
#3... Turn... I couldn't have picked a better card to come. What do you do? I could just lead out.. but I'd rather trap with my huge draw... I check... Rats... Dealer Checks behind...
#4... River... Boo-Yah... Runner Runner Royal... What do you do? The consensus was to push which was my first thoughts as well; but would I get called? I thought no... If he had an ace, he could have made trips (seemed unlikely since he checked the turn)... would he call with a bad kicker? Would you? Dealer has 1210.. pot is 1050.. I put out 800... hoping that he goes all in with this obvious looking bet that I want called. Well, he just called with his A6o and I won a pretty good pot; but didn't knock him out.
I really don't think he calls an all in with his tourney on the line with so many things that beat him. Any straight, any flush and AT+... who knows... I wasn't too upset with the result.. It turned out to really bite me as the Dealer made a really big comeback.
Well, it was fun, as usual and I'll give it go again on Wednesday playing the Mook

I certainly rememember that hand. One key piece of information missing here is the stack size. I honestly considered raising all in on the river when you bet. I thought a) you couldn't have had a straight so I thought you might be betting with your missed flush draw. Maybe if you got lucky and caught two pair (like a J-10) on the turn, my 3rd ace on the river would better that. And considering I think it would have been only like 400 more, I felt that pushing here was justified. Fortunately, I also thought that there's no point in putting extra chips in here where I could also realistically be beat by a backdoor flush, some funkey straight and if I think my hand is good enough, it was call worthy but not raise worthy.

Having said that, I will say that I was surprised. I was laying the ground work of building a tight image (which I think worked because you thought I was fairly tight, ie I don't automatically try to steal from the button) so the call from the blinds with KQ is definite but a call on the flop was very surprising. At that point, I thought you had a better ace, maybe a flush draw or a 10. Did not expect KQ. Actually, to tell you the truth, I tossed the possibility of a KQ out the door. So, on the turn when the J came, now, I was certainly worried that you were checking a monster (like AJ, catching two pair) and that if I bet out on the turn again, I'd be raised. True, there was a chance that you were just chasing a flush but I wanted to see another card before I did anything here. The river brought another ace which in my mind made it very unlikely that you had an ace in your hand. So, then I thought is this guy trying to buy this pot now that he missed his flush? And that's why I called. Again, wasn't push worthy for me at that point but if you pushed, I don't know if I would have folded. I may have. I really don't know. You definitely got a lot of chips out of me though so at least that's good. Tough to win a lot of chips with a royal, I think.

Nice hand... unfortunately, my miracle comeback was cut short when I jammed with 88 on a 3-4-4 board, only to be called by Waffles with 33... And yes, I raised preflop from UTG. Dammit, I'm a tight player! :)

Thanks Alan for the comments. My hand converter was supposed to put stack sizes in there; but didn't and I was too lazy to do so. I mentioned stack sizes in the middle of question #4; but that was about it.

It's nice to see what others are thinking on similar hands (i.e. you thought I may have a bigger ace or 2 pair and then I thought you might not have one).. Good stuff.

My stats showed you as a 16/10 guy which to me was fairly tight (but not overly tight). Like you said, won't steal blinds everytime.

See ya at the Mook tonight.

#1... I think the call is fine. You have to be able to lay down if you meet resistance though if you only flop one pair.
#2... The call is fine if you think your opponent will pay you off if you hit your straight. If not, don't call.
#3... I agree with the check. I also think he played it correctly by checking behind you.
#4... I think the push is the right move. You bet enough that he "should" push so why not make him play for it all anyway.

One comment about the first hand. I don't have any hard stats on the guy but I generally put cemfredmd on a tighter side. To tell you the truth, at that stage, with that chip stack, I would actually give his call a lot more respect (like he wanted someone to raise preflop so he can jam). In other words, JJ at this stage of the tourney with his chip stack is generally where he wants all his money in the middle, even if it's a race. At least, that's the opinion I have of the guy. Plus, personally, I'm not a big fan of pushing all in on a marginal situation like that... I mean even though it's a safe looking board, that also means that it's a safe looking board for the opponent. I think I like that move if you actually had the 7 because I think the guy could be calling with a wide range thinking you're trying to bluff at it.

Hoy had a nice post today about a pseudo similar situation.

And yeah, I'll see you at the mook tonight!
